A recent study has revealed that a staggering amount of microplastics are ending up in human brains. Researchers analyzed 91 brain samples from autopsied bodies and found that every single sample contained microplastics. Furthermore, the levels of plastic contamination were significantly higher than those found in liver and kidney samples from the same individuals.
The findings suggest that human grey matter is a major dumping ground for tiny plastic particles, making it one of the most plastic-polluted tissues yet sampled. In fact, 24 brain samples measured an average of 0.5% plastic by weight.
Lead author Matthew Campen expressed alarm at the results, stating, “It’s pretty alarming. There’s much more plastic in our brains than I ever would have imagined or been comfortable with.”
This discovery adds to a growing list of body parts found to be riddled with plastics, including testicles, penises, semen, arteries, hearts, lungs, and bone marrow. Previous studies have linked microplastic presence to fertility issues, disrupted immune systems, impaired memory, and even increased cancer risk in young people.
The researchers also found a concerning link between microplastics and dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, the study suggests that the increasing concentration of plastics in the environment is mirrored by a similar rise in microplastics in human brains.
In response to these findings, experts are calling for urgent action to address plastic pollution. “It is now imperative to declare a global emergency,” stated Sedat Gündoğdu, a microplastics expert from Cukurova University.
