Showtime’s new leadership has made its first major programming decision regarding its flagship franchise, Dexter. Paramount TV Studios team leader Matt Thunell has confirmed that the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin will not be moving forward. In contrast, the network is greenlighting Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection, with a writers room already in place.
According to sources, the decision to focus on Resurrection was due to logistical reasons, including the showrunner’s shift of writers from the original series to Resurrection. The prequel’s hiatus has become permanent. The move marks a significant change for the franchise, which had been heavily invested in expanding universes around popular IPs.
Dexter: Original Sin premiered last December with 2.1 million global viewers and received praise for its casting and execution. Despite this success, the show’s fate remains uncertain. Dexter: Resurrection, on the other hand, has outperformed its predecessor in terms of viewership, launching with 3.1 million cross-platform viewers.
The writers room for Dexter: Resurrection will now focus on greenlighting Season 2 subject to budget approvals. The health and longevity of the main franchise are seen as crucial to the network’s decision-making process.
