Shrek 5 has moved from its original release date of December 23, 2026, to Wednesday, June 30, 2027. The film’s departure from the crowded holiday corridor featuring Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part III, and Ice Age 6, which all open on December 18, 2026, is attributed to a twinned move by Universal, shifting an untitled Illumination film to April 16, 2027.
Shrek 5 marks the first main series installment since Shrek Forever in 2010. The film boasts an impressive voice cast, including Zendaya as Shrek’s daughter and returning mainstays Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona). Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon will helm the film alongside Brad Ableson, who co-directed Minions: The Rise of Gru.
The Shrek franchise originated from William Steig’s 1990 book, which was adapted into a feature-length Oscar-winning film in 2001. The original film followed an ogre named Shrek as he fell for Fiona, the princess of Far Far Away trapped in an ogre’s body. Donkey provided comedic relief and pathos to the story.
With this new release date, fans can look forward to another installment in the beloved franchise, with its unique blend of humor and fairy-tale twists.
