Shroud of Turin Study Suggests Image is Not Human Impression

The Shroud of Turin, a holy relic viewed as the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, has long been shrouded in mystery. According to Brazilian researcher Cícero Moraes, the ancient linen cloth bears an image that does not resemble a real human being.

Moraes’ study supports a hypothesis first proposed in 1978, which suggests that the Shroud’s image is an artwork rather than an impression of Jesus Christ or anyone else. The research proposes that the image was created by placing a sheet on top of a low-relief sculpture and then rubbing it with pigment or browning it.

Using open-source software, Moraes compared the appearance of a sheet wrapped around a 3D model of a human body to a sheet placed on top of a low-relief sculpture. The results showed that the image on the Shroud appears wider and more stretched out than expected when laid flat.

The study’s findings, published in Archaeometry, suggest that the Shroud’s image is unlikely to be an impression of Jesus Christ or anyone else. Instead, it highlights the potential of digital technologies to address historical mysteries by combining science, art, and technology.
