Sigma has announced the 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports lens, a high-end ultra-telephoto zoom lens designed for professionals. The lens combines the optical performance of an ultra-telephoto prime with the versatility of a wide zoom range.
The Sigma 300-600mm measures 6.6 inches in diameter and weighs 140.6 ounces, but its internal construction minimizes center of gravity fluctuations. It features 28 elements arranged into 21 groups, including six FLD lenses and one SLD optic. The lens offers an f/4 through f/22 aperture range, a 13-bladed diaphragm, and Sigma’s Nano Porous Coating.
The lens barrel is made from magnesium alloy, while the hood is made of carbon. The exterior features thermal insulation paint to suppress heat absorption from sunlight. The lens is dust and splash resistant.
The focus drive is powered by Sigma’s High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor, which provides “high thrust” for quick and precise focusing. The lens also features Sigma’s OS2 optical stabilization algorithm with two modes: Mode 1 for most still photography and video situations, and Mode 2 for panning shots.
The lens offers a function ring for added customization, allowing photographers to shift the focus preset mode instantly or control the Power Focus mode for smooth focus shifting during video capture. The included tripod socket has a rotating mechanism with optional click and de-click detents at 90-degree angles.
Sigma also developed a new drop-in circular polarizer and a variable ND filter that can be adjusted by approximately seven stops. The lens is compatible with Sigma’s teleconverters, including the L-Mount version, which offers AF-enabled shooting at a maximum focal length of 1,200mm.
The Sigma 300-600mm f/4 DG OS Sports lens will be available this April in both L-mount and Sony E-mount for $5,999.
