Signal has introduced a new feature in its Windows app designed to protect users’ privacy by preventing system screenshots from being captured while the “screen security” setting is enabled.
The company states that this feature, which is now enabled by default on Windows 11, aims to safeguard sensitive content displayed on the screen.
The new feature was created in response to Microsoft’s Recall feature, announced last year, which captures and stores system screenshots continuously for user activity tracking.
Microsoft initially paused the rollout of Recall after facing backlash but restarted testing in April through the Windows Preview Channel. The company made the feature opt-in and added a pause option, yet Signal claims it still captures sensitive content.
When screen security is enabled, users taking screenshots will receive a blank screen instead of the actual display. Additionally, some functions like screen readers may not work as intended.
To disable this setting, users can access Signal Settings > Privacy > Screen Security.
Signal expresses concerns about the implications of Recall and hopes that future developers consider these privacy aspects more thoroughly.
