Simone Biles has addressed her stance on fair competition in women’s sports, following a feud with Riley Gaines on social media. The 11-time Olympic medalist gymnast said she believes principles like competitive equity and inclusivity are essential, but the current system doesn’t adequately balance them.
Biles sparked the controversy when she expressed support for transgender athletes competing in women’s sports. Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer, accused Biles of being “male-apologist” and damaging her legacy over two tweets. The drama unfolded on social media, with other figures like Danica Patrick weighing in.
In a lengthy post, Biles clarified that her concern is not about singling out individual athletes but rather addressing the flawed system that often leads to heated exchanges. She expressed empathy and respect for transgender athletes and emphasized the importance of fair competition while maintaining inclusivity.
Gaines, however, remained critical, stating that she believes common sense will prevail in this issue. However, both athletes have now accepted each other’s apology, with Gaines welcoming Biles to the fight for fair sports and a future for female athletes.
