Simple Daily Exercise May Lower Dementia Risk

A recent study published in The Journal of the American Medical Directors Association has found that engaging in as little as five minutes of light exercise per day can lower the risk of developing dementia. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health analyzed data from nearly 90,000 adults in the United Kingdom and found that participants who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity for 35-69.9 minutes per week had a 60% lower risk of dementia. This is comparable to those who engaged in 70-139.9 minutes or more per week, which saw a 63-69% reduction in risk. The study suggests that even small amounts of physical activity can have a significant impact on reducing the risk of dementia, particularly for older adults. Experts attribute this effect to increased blood flow to the brain, improved disposal of metabolic waste, and decreased inflammation.
