A 25-year heart surgeon, Dr Jeremy London, has shared a simple method to determine if there’s an issue with your heart health. The test is straightforward and can be done from the comfort of your own home, taking only a short amount of time.
Dr London explained that not everyone needs to undergo a blood test, X-ray, or electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess their heart health. He claims his trick involves listening to your body’s “red flags,” which include:
* Chest tightness
* Chest pain
* Shortness of breath
If you experience pain radiating to the jaw or arm during exertion that is relieved with rest, this could be a sign of clogged arteries.
According to Dr London, when there’s a blockage in the front of the heart, the area below it becomes blood-starved, causing symptoms. These symptoms are often associated with angina, a non-life-threatening chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscles.
However, Dr London warns that this is a warning sign for a potential heart attack or stroke. The British Heart Foundation explains that atherosclerosis, also known as plaque buildup in the coronary arteries, can cause blockages and eventually lead to narrowed arteries that cannot get enough blood to the heart.
If you suspect you may have blockages in your heart arteries, Dr London advises running through the test and checking with your GP if you’ve got any concerns.
