Simple Relationship Found Between Energy and Information Transmission in Quantum Field Theory

Researchers have made a breakthrough discovery in quantum field theory, finding a surprisingly simple relationship between energy transmission rates and information transmission rates across interfaces connecting different theories. This breakthrough was published in Physical Review Letters on August 30.

The interface between two quantum field theories is crucial in particle physics and condensed matter physics, but calculating the rates of energy and information transmission has been challenging. A team led by Hirosi Ooguri and Fred Kavli showed that for theories with scale invariance in two dimensions, there are universal inequalities between three quantities.

These inequalities reveal a simple relationship: the rate at which energy is transmitted cannot exceed the rate at which information is transmitted, and both require a sufficient number of states. This implies that transmitting energy requires transmitting information as well. The researchers also demonstrated that no stronger inequality is possible.

This discovery sheds new light on an important problem in quantum field theory, highlighting the connection between energy and information transmission. By understanding this relationship, scientists can better grasp complex phenomena and make progress in fields like particle physics and condensed matter physics.
