Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s vampire thriller “Sinners” is dominating the box office for a second consecutive weekend. The film earned $13 million on Friday, marking an 8% drop from its daily total last week, despite adding more theaters to showings.
The key to “Sinners”‘ staying power lies in its demand for premium formats like Imax, which accounted for 20% of revenue on opening weekend. Even with a production budget of $90 million, the film has consistently outperformed industry projections and snagged a No. 1 opening ahead of “A Minecraft Movie” last week.
Industry trackers project a drop below 10% in the three-day total for “Sinners,” which would be its best second-weekend slide since 2009’s record-holding “Avatar.” If it crosses $100 million domestically, it will join Pixar’s “Coco” as the first original feature to reach this milestone.
Beyond its own success, “Sinners”‘ staying power highlights the appetite for original blockbuster productions when talent delivers. The film is winning the battle for viewers against newer releases like “The Accountant 2” and “Until Dawn,” which have lower production budgets but are backed by established IPs.
In contrast, “The Accountant 2” earned $9.4 million on Friday with a higher production budget of $80 million, which may not have been enough to guarantee its success at the box office. Its R-rated rating and strong Cinema Score grade bode well for it, but Amazon MGM’s logic suggests that its true value lies in streaming rather than theatrical releases.
Disney’s re-release of “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith” takes a close third place with $11.3 million on Friday, likely due to its high respect among fans and reputation since its 2005 debut. In comparison, its anniversary re-releases have done well in recent years.
The final weekend rankings will be determined by how “Sinners” performs against “The Accountant 2.”
