Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump discussed the need to consolidate a Gaza ceasefire deal in a phone call on Saturday, according to Egyptian officials. The two leaders also agreed on the importance of implementing the ceasefire phases between Israel and Hamas, as well as increasing humanitarian aid shipments to the enclave.
Despite the positive tone of the conversation, there was no mention of Trump’s previous suggestion that Egypt and Jordan should take in Palestinians from Gaza, which critics have called an “act of injustice.” Sisi had previously rejected this idea, describing it as unjust, but Trump reiterated his stance on Thursday.
The topic of Palestinian transfers was not discussed during the call, according to both Egyptian and US officials. The White House stated that the conversation focused on issues such as the release of hostages from Gaza, economic cooperation, and a disputed dam project in Ethiopia.
Sisi extended an invitation to Trump to visit Egypt soon to discuss regional problems and strengthen their economic ties.
