Six Flags Entertainment Corporation announced its plans to shut down the Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor theme parks in Bowie, Maryland by the end of the 2025 season. The decision comes after a review of the park’s portfolio, which deemed it not strategic for long-term growth.
The 500-acre property will be put up for sale with the intention of redevelopment. The park, which employs around 70 full-time employees, will honor season pass holders through the end of 2025 and provide severance and benefits to eligible associates.
While details on the fate of individual rides and attractions remain unclear, relocation or sale to other amusement parks are options being considered. This marks the latest chapter in a history spanning over four decades, from its opening as The Largo Wildlife Preserve in 1974 to its recreation as Six Flags America in 1999.
