The Philadelphia 76ers have abandoned their plans to build a new arena in Center City after city council members and neighborhood groups opposed the proposal. The team will instead work with Comcast Spectacor to build a new arena within the South Philly stadium complex.
In December, City Council approved the Sixers’ plan to build a $1.3 billion arena on East Market Street. However, opposition from neighbors and community groups led city officials to reconsider the deal. Comcast Spectacor had previously proposed revamping the stadium district for $2.5 billion.
Council members Kendra Brooks and Nicolas O’Rourke expressed their disappointment with the decision, stating that it was driven by a power struggle between corporations and billionaires. They argued that the team’s plans were always more sensible to stay in South Philadelphia.
The opposition group NoArena Washington Square West released a statement celebrating the news, saying “What a thrill to see this threat to Chinatown and our neighborhood disappear!” Former Councilmember Helen Gym also welcomed the decision, stating that it was a testament to the power of community organizing.
The Sixers have played at the Wells Fargo Center since 1996. Their lease is up in 2030-31 season, and they will likely continue to play there until then.
