Action Spy Thriller “Skybound” Delves into CIA Corruption
A moderate action spy thriller directed by James Hawes, “Skybound” is a muscular film inspired by the styles of Bourne and Mission: Impossible. The movie follows Rami Malek as Charles Heller, a nerdy CIA intelligence analyst whose wife is murdered by terrorists in London. Enraged, he blackmails his superiors into training him to be an assassin.
As Charles navigates the dark world of espionage, he faces off against Colonel Henderson, played by Laurence Fishburne, who tries to keep him in check. The film is based on an 80s bestseller by Robert Littell and features a thrilling poolside scene where Charles must use his wits to take down enemies.
However, the film’s portrayal of Charles’ ruthlessness raises questions about his relatable status as a character. The final confrontation with the villain lacks tension, partly due to a failure to address the CIA’s culpability in past events.
Malek shines in certain scenes, but struggles with conveying anguished emotion on camera. Holt McCallany brings comedic relief as the cynical agency honcho Moore, while Rami Malek’s distinctive performance keeps the film engaging despite its flaws.
