Skydance’s takeover of Paramount Global is set to bring significant changes to CBS and CBS News once the acquisition is complete. The company has informed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that it plans to conduct a “comprehensive review” of CBS to ensure the network operates in the public interest.
As part of this review, an ombudsman will be hired who will report directly to the president of CBS News and handle complaints of bias or other concerns. The ombudsman’s role will be guaranteed for at least two years, with CBS News leadership committing to carefully review any complaints.
However, Skydance has also announced plans to eliminate all diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives within the company. This move will affect hiring practices, promotions, compensation, public messaging, and more. The office of global inclusion will also be eliminated.
Despite these changes, Skydance has pledged to maintain a “productive partnership” with its CBS affiliates. The FCC is currently reviewing the transfer of CBS broadcast licenses, which is necessary for the Paramount Global transaction to take place.
The future of CBS News remains uncertain, following controversy surrounding the 60 Minutes settlement. However, approval of the deal could come soon, pending Skydance’s new commitments.
