Slovakia is considering reciprocal measures against Ukraine if it stops the transit of Russian gas to the country, Prime Minister Robert Fico said. If Kyiv halts gas deliveries through Ukraine by January 1, Slovakia may take action such as halting backup electricity supplies. This move would cost Slovakia around €500 million in lost fees and increase costs for alternative routes.
The stoppage of Russian gas transit has significant implications for the EU, with estimated costs reaching €120 billion in 2025-2026 due to higher prices for both gas and electricity production. Fico blames Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy for the move, which would affect not only Slovakia but also the entire bloc.
Slovakia has alternative sources of gas, including contracts with BP, ExxonMobil, Shell, Eni, and RWE, reducing its reliance on Russian supplies. However, Fico’s shift in foreign policy has led to increased cooperation with Russia, with him becoming the third EU leader to visit Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow since the war started. Despite this, Slovakia continues to provide humanitarian aid to Ukraine and export energy resources to its neighbor.
The situation highlights the delicate balance of interests between Slovakia and Ukraine, particularly regarding Russian gas transit. As tensions escalate, both countries must navigate their relationships with Russia and the EU while ensuring the stability of their energy supplies.
