Slovakia Threatens to Cut Off Ukrainian Gas Supplies

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has threatened to cut off back-up power supplies to Ukraine if Kyiv stops transporting Russian gas to central Europe. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy pushed back against the threat, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of giving Fico an order to take action that would harm Slovakia’s interests.

Zelenskiy claimed that Russia is trying to use its energy leverage to gain an advantage over Ukraine, and that Fico’s threat is a result of this pressure. The Ukrainian president stated that the situation with Russian gas supplies is “very tense” and that Kyiv will not abandon its efforts to transport the gas to central Europe.

The threat has raised concerns about the potential impact on European energy security. If Slovakia were to cut off power supplies to Ukraine, it could have significant consequences for the region’s economy and energy market.
