Sly Stone Emerges from Reclusive Life with New Memoir

Legendary musician Sly Stone has re-emerged from his reclusive life, and with it comes a new memoir that promises to shed light on the enigmatic artist’s journey. The book, titled “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” is a personal account of Stone’s life, written in collaboration with writer Ben Greenman and longtime manager Arlene Hirschkowitz.

Born Sylvester Stewart, Stone was the mastermind behind Sly and the Family Stone, one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. His unique blend of rock ‘n’ roll and R&B captivated audiences, producing timeless classics like “Everyday People,” “Dance to the Music,” and “Hot Fun in the Summertime.”

However, Stone’s life took a darker turn in the 1970s, marked by struggles with addiction and personal turmoil. By the 1980s, the band had disbanded, and Stone’s music career was all but forgotten.

In recent years, Stone has made sporadic appearances, including a 2006 Grammy tribute performance. Now, at 80 years old, he seems to have found peace and sobriety, according to his longtime friend and manager Arlene Hirschkowitz.

“I think so,” says George Clinton, a fellow musician and longtime friend of Stone’s. “I hope not, let’s put it that way.” Clinton also believes that Stone’s music will continue to be celebrated long after he’s gone.

The new memoir promises to offer a candid look at Stone’s life, from his early days as a DJ in San Francisco to his rise as a musician and his struggles with addiction. With nearly 300 interview sessions, the book is a labor of love for both Stone and writer Ben Greenman.

As Sly Stone moves forward, it seems that his family remains tight-knit. His daughter Novena Carmel expressed gratitude for moments like talking about her father’s memoir, saying they are “the most surreal” experience.

Sly Stone’s story serves as a reminder that even the most enigmatic figures can find redemption and peace in their later years. With his new memoir, Stone has once again taken center stage, offering a glimpse into his remarkable life and legacy.
