Small Business Optimism Falls Amid Rising Uncertainty

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Small Business Optimism Index dropped 2.3 points in January to 102.8, marking the third consecutive month above its 51-year average of 98. This upward trend is a welcome respite for small business owners. However, the Uncertainty Index reached its highest level since 2010 at 100, fueled by ongoing tariffs and labor shortages.

NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg stated that despite optimism about future business conditions, small businesses are facing significant challenges. Hiring difficulties persist as they struggle to find qualified workers, while capital investments have decreased in anticipation of uncertain economic conditions ahead.
