Smart Home Sensor Boosts Productivity and Reduces Sitting Time

Sitting for long periods can increase the risk of serious health conditions like type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and obesity. To combat this, I created an automation using my smart home sensor to nag me when I’ve been sitting for too long. This helped me stay active throughout my day, increasing my stand hours by a significant amount.

My mmWave presence sensor is equipped with a desk presence monitor that detects when I’m at my desk and triggers automations like turning on lights and waking up my computer. When I sit down again, it sends a reminder to get up after 30 minutes of inactivity. If I don’t respond, the reminders become increasingly aggressive and frequent.

To make the automation more realistic, I added real-world logic that excludes certain situations where I need to stay seated for longer periods, such as during video calls or late-night work sessions. The system now only nags me when necessary, making it easier for me to stay active without feeling too bothered or restricted.

The result is a significant increase in my stand hours and overall productivity. By harnessing the power of smart home technology, I’ve been able to make a positive impact on my health and well-being.
