Smartphone Use Linked to Hemorrhoid Risk?

Some doctors warn that scrolling on your phone while on the toilet may increase your risk of developing hemorrhoids. A study found a 46% link between smartphone use and increased hemorrhoid risk, but experts say it’s not that simple.

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum that can be painful and uncomfortable. While using a smartphone while on the toilet might seem like an unlikely cause, doctors are advising people to be more aware of their habits to prevent hemorrhoids.

However, Dr. Satish Rao, a gastroenterologist, disputes the claim that smartphones are directly causing more hemorrhoids. He points out that prolonged periods of pushing or straining during bowel movements can lead to hemorrhoids, not just sitting on the toilet.

The study’s findings may be due to several factors, including the age of the participants and the method used to screen for hemorrhoids. The researchers were more likely to find hemorrhoids in patients who underwent a screening colonoscopy, rather than those who reported pain or bleeding.

In any case, doctors agree that limiting smartphone use while on the toilet can help reduce the risk of developing hemorrhoids. Eating high-fiber foods, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding long periods of pushing or straining are also effective ways to prevent hemorrhoid development.

While some cases may require medical attention, most hemorrhoid cases can be treated with over-the-counter medications. If you experience persistent pain or bleeding, it’s best to consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
