Smishing Scam Targets Holiday Packages

Scammers are taking advantage of the holiday rush by sending fake text messages claiming to be from the US Postal Service about package delivery issues. The scam, known as smishing, combines phishing with short messages or texts and aims to trick victims into sharing personal information or clicking on a link.

According to the USPS, they do not send text messages directly to customers about package problems. However, the agency is warning consumers about this type of scam, which can lead to identity theft and other financial issues.

To protect yourself, the USPS recommends signing up for text tracking services like Informed Delivery, which provides free package tracking updates via email or text message. This service does not ask for personal information, unlike legitimate tracking updates from the USPS.

If you have fallen victim to this scam, report it to the US Postal Inspection Service. To avoid falling prey to smishing scams in the future, be cautious when receiving unsolicited text messages and never share personal information or click on suspicious links.
