The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is warning Android and iPhone users about an ongoing “smishing” text messaging scam. The scammers claim the victim owes money for unpaid road tolls and threaten to impose a late fee if they don’t pay immediately.
A text message with a fake link will be sent, supposedly from a specific state’s toll service, instructing the recipient to click on it to settle their alleged outstanding balance. However, this is a ruse – the website appears legitimate but is actually a phishing site.
The FBI advises not clicking on any links or responding to such messages. Instead, report the incident to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and verify your account status with the toll service’s official website or customer service number.
If you’ve already clicked on the link, secure your accounts and dispute any unauthorized charges on your financial statements. The scammers have received thousands of complaints since last year, making it essential to be vigilant about these smishing scams.
