Smucker’s Joins Kraft Heinz in Eliminating Artificial Dyes from Products

J.M. Smucker Co. becomes the latest major food manufacturer to commit to removing artificial colors from its products, joining General Mills and Kraft Heinz in a push to rid the US food supply of such dyes.

The company plans to eliminate FD&C artificial dyes from its sugar-free fruit spreads and ice cream toppings within two years, with certain products from its Hostess brand portfolio also affected. This commitment aligns with the Trump administration’s goals of removing artificial colors from the nation’s food supply.

Smucker’s already offers most of its consumer foods without FD&C colors, including many products available to K-12 schools. The company has previously removed high-fructose corn syrup from its Uncrustables sandwiches and introduced fruit spreads featuring all-natural ingredients.

The FDA has approved seven certified color additives for use in food, but is working with the industry to eliminate six of these dyes by 2027. This effort aims to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply, following a series of new measures announced by the Food and Drug Administration in April.

The decision comes after General Mills and Kraft Heinz issued their own commitments to remove all artificial dyes from their US portfolios by the end of 2027. The move is part of a growing trend among food manufacturers to adopt more natural ingredients and reduce artificial additives from their products.
