A new variant of malware, known as the 404 Keylogger or Snake keylogger, has been detected targeting Windows systems. The keylogger monitors keystrokes to intercept passwords and other typed data, posing a significant threat to users.
According to Fortinet, the malware has already made over 280 million attack attempts this year alone, with millions of infections per day at peak times. The snake keylogger can also collect personally identifiable information using web tools and upload stolen credentials to command servers via channels like SMTP and Telegram bots.
The malware uses AutoIT, a binary program used for automation under Windows, to execute processes without requiring admin rights. It creates a copy of itself in the Windows Startup folder, ensuring it runs on every restart, even if the PC is shut down.
To protect yourself from the snake keylogger, be cautious with phishing attacks and never click on links or open attachments from unknown senders. Keep your data private and avoid passing it to third parties.
Experts rate the risk for private individuals and organizations as “high,” emphasizing the need for vigilance against this new threat. Stay informed about the latest phishing scams and take necessary precautions to safeguard your digital security.
