Snapchat’s parent company has announced plans to release its sixth-generation augmented reality (AR) glasses, called Specs, in 2026. The new device will feature smaller and lighter designs than previous versions, running on the company’s Snap OS operating system.
Specs will utilize AR technology to overlay digital imagery onto the physical world, allowing users to interact with digital information in new ways. Developers can now incorporate Google’s Gemini AI models into their programs, offering more options for building AR apps.
The consumer-focused Specs come after the recent release of developer-only Spectacles 6 in September 2024, which used a leasing model and required users to pay $99 a month for a full year. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel expressed excitement about the growth of AI and AR technologies, enabling new human-centered computing experiences.
Other companies like Apple, Meta, and Alphabet are also investing heavily in smart glasses, with recent releases including Apple’s Vision Pro goggles and Meta’s Quest VR headsets. Google has announced a partnership with Warby Parker to release its own smart glasses, valued at $150 million.
