Snapchat Scraps Simplified Design Amid User Backlash

Snapchat is ditching plans to simplify its design after losing 1 million users in North America. The company had been testing a “Simple Snapchat” redesign that would have removed certain tabs, but it has decided to stick with a five-tab layout instead. This change will keep the Spotlight tab next to the camera.

The original plan aimed to remove the Snap Map and private chats tabs from the main navigation bar. However, users consistently preferred the current five-tab design. In a letter to investors, Snap cited user engagement data showing that users prefer this layout for its tile-based content discovery and dedicated map tab.

This decision comes after Snapchat’s 2018 redesign, which also aimed to separate friends’ and brands’ content. The company reports a 14% year-over-year revenue increase to $1.36 billion, driven by growth in advertising and its subscription service. Global daily active users are up to 460 million, while North American usage remains flat at 99 million.
