“Saturday Night Live” faced backlash this weekend after a segment on its “Weekend Update” show made light of the recent murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The sketch comedy program spent nearly a minute and a half discussing the tragedy, including America’s fascination with the alleged gunman’s appearance.
Co-host Colin Jost quipped, “The manhunt continues for the assassin who gunned down the CEO of United Healthcare on Wednesday… it really says something about America that a guy was murdered in cold blood and the two main reactions were, ‘Yeah, well health care stinks!’ And also, ‘Girl, that shooter hot.'”
Many viewers took to social media to condemn the commentary, citing a lack of consideration for Thompson’s family. The CEO, 50, had two sons with his wife.
“I couldn’t watch this segment,” one person wrote. “The victim’s family and friends are very much grieving right now.” Another user agreed, stating they would no longer be watching SNL due to the insensitive jokes.
Despite some viewers enjoying the Port Authority joke, many expressed disappointment with Jost’s commentary. The NYPD released an image of the suspected gunman without a mask, seen smiling while flirting with a female employee.
Representatives for “Saturday Night Live” have yet to comment on the backlash.
