The second full moon of 2025, known as the Snow Moon, will be visible in the night sky soon. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, it will reach peak illumination at 8:53 a.m. EST on Wednesday, February 12.
As the sun sets on the western horizon, the moon will rise in the east and appear bright all night due to its position on the opposite side of the sun. The full Snow Moon earned its name from heavy snowfall in February, making it one of the snowiest months in the US.
The Snow Moon has several alternative names associated with animals, including Bald Eagle Moon, Bear Moon, Black Bear Moon, Raccoon Moon, Groundhog Moon, and Goose Moon. While it peaks on February 12, it will still appear bright before and after this date. On February 9, the nearly full moon can be spotted near Mars, accompanied by stars Pollux and Castor in Gemini to its north.
