Snow Moon Sets Over US This Week

This month’s full Snow Moon is expected to rise on Wednesday, February 12. Because of its full appearance in the sky, it will be visible as a nearly full moon from Tuesday to Thursday.

The name “Snow Moon” comes from the fact that snow is prominent across the US during this time. However, other cultures have given different names to this full moon over generations. The Oneida tribe calls it the “Midwinter Moon,” while the Comanche tribe refers to it as the “Sleet Moon.” Celtic histories also refer to it as the “Ice Moon.”

Some tribes in the region have named February’s full moon after its effects on nature, such as trees cracking due to cold weather. The Cherokee tribes call it the “Hungry Moon” and the “Bone Moon,” referencing hunger and scarcity.

Interestingly, February can be a month without a full moon if one occurs at the end of January. This phenomenon, known as a “Black Moon” month, happens every 19 years. According to the Farmers’ Almanac, the next two instances will occur in 2037 and 2075.

If you have clear skies, NASA’s skywatching guide recommends finding the nearly full moon tonight, located east of Mars, about three finger widths below it.
