A fresh layer of snow covers New Jersey, and more is expected to fall this week, setting the stage for the February “snow moon” to appear in the sky. The full moon will be at its fullest phase on Wednesday, Feb 12, with 99% visibility on Tuesday night and Thursday night.
Next month, a total lunar eclipse is scheduled for March 14, with the moon taking on a reddish-orange hue as it passes through Earth’s shadow. This phenomenon occurs when sunlight reflects off the moon’s surface, causing it to appear “blood-red.”
February full moons have various nicknames, including the “snow moon,” “hunger moon,” “storm moon,” and “trapper’s moon.” The latter was given to the February full moon by early American colonists because trapping beaver, fox, and mink during winter was optimal at this time.
With the lunar eclipse approaching, residents are invited to enjoy a celestial event without special safety glasses.
