Snow White Falls Short at Box Office Amid Controversy

Disney’s live-action retelling of “Snow White,” a $270 million production, opened with a domestic box office total of $43 million, falling short of initial estimates but still outperforming other Disney films. The film’s success is attributed to its ability to settle in and pull the train, as predicted by industry analyst David A. Gross.

However, the film faced controversy before its release, sparking debates over casting choices, including Rachel Zegler as the Evil Queen. This distraction may have hurt box office performance, according to Gross. The remake’s reception highlights the challenges of adapting classic animated films into live-action remakes.

Despite this, “Snow White” surpassed other Disney films and could see steady growth in the coming weeks. Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian notes that the box office has been affected by shifting interest and the over-saturation of remakes.

Industry analysts attribute the decline in moviegoers to a decrease in visits over the last three weeks, with the box office down nearly 7% year-over-year. Shawn Robbins predicts this trend will reverse as summer blockbusters release closer to April.

A Minecraft Movie, set for release on April 4, is expected to attract families and children, potentially boosting the box office. As Dergarabedian notes, the box office sees ups and downs, and “this story is always about the unexpected twists.”
