Snow White Remake Surpasses Expectations Despite Backlash

Disney’s live-action adaptation of Snow White has topped North America’s box office chart despite receiving underwhelming reviews from critics. The film earned an estimated $87.3 million globally in its opening weekend, with almost half coming from the US.

However, the movie fell short of expectations, as it reportedly cost over $270 million to produce. The remake sparked controversy before its release, with many criticizing the casting of Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot’s pro-Israel comments.

The film received mixed reviews, with a 44% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience reaction score of 73%. While some praised its captivating moments, others described it as “toe-curlingly terrible”.

Despite the negative reception, Snow White has become this year’s most divisive film. The movie struggled in mainland China, earning less than $1 million in its first three days in cinemas.

Industry consultant Patrick Frater believes that the multiple controversies surrounding the film may have diminished its appeal. He noted that the waning impact of Hollywood productions in Asia since the pandemic may also be a factor.
