Disney’s Thursday preview figure for Snow White has arrived at $3.5 million, raising concerns over its potential box office performance. Early PostTrak data shows a mixed response from audiences, with 5-star ratings among kids under 12 and 84% of those showing up as girls.
However, general audience ratings are lower at 3 stars, with only 39% recommending the film. In contrast, Warner Bros’ The Alto Knights has a higher definite recommend rating of 44%. Parents with young children rate Snow White 2½ stars, but their recommendation is higher at 52%.
Industry analysts note that bad buzz can be an indicator if it impacts tracking. Quorum pointed out that the best comparable film for Snow White is 2023’s The Little Mermaid, which also received similar ire on social media.
Tracking data shows interest among young women dwindling from 66% to 58% and then 68%. This decline in interest has raised concerns about the film’s potential opening. Quorum suggests that when a film relies heavily on a single demographic, erosion can have severe consequences.
Despite its well-produced musical aspects, including songs by Oscar winners Pasek and Paul, Snow White faces significant challenges. Its critical score is low at 46%, but similar Disney films like Maleficent and Aladdin achieved A CinemaScores despite lower ratings. The film will be booked at 4,200 theaters with various premium formats.
The Alto Knights, another opening this weekend, is expected to perform poorly due to its limited appeal. Ash, a sci-fi horror movie, received positive reviews but may struggle in its niche audience.
