A new report from Southern California Edison (SCE) has linked a downed line to the spark that ignited the Hurst Fire in Sylmar on January 7. The fire, which was reported around 10:30 p.m., quickly spread and forced evacuations before nearly 80% containment was reached.
According to the report, one of SCE’s circuits in the Eagle Rock-Sylmar area experienced a relay issue approximately one minute after the fire was initially reported. A downed line was also found at a tower associated with that circuit. However, it is unclear whether the damage occurred before or after the start of the fire.
SCE is still investigating the incident and its possible connection to the fire. The Hurst Fire is part of a larger trend of wildfires sparked throughout Los Angeles County in recent days, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds.
