Soccer Fans Unite to Protest Pension Cuts for Argentine Retirees

Soccer fans from rival teams have joined forces with Argentine pensioners in a show of solidarity against government-led pension cuts. The protesters, who gather weekly outside the congressional building, are demanding better support for the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

The unusual alliance comes after previous demonstrations resulted in injured elderly individuals and police violence. This time, supporters of Boca Juniors and Racing teams, as well as fans of Chacarita Juniors, marched alongside pensioners, adopting a phrase from Argentine legend Diego Maradona to emphasize their commitment to defending retirees.

Critics argue that President Javier Milei’s spending overhaul, which includes slashing pension payouts, is detrimental to Argentina’s most vulnerable population. Senator Martin Lousteau emphasized the need for fiscal responsibility while cautioning against inflicting pain on retirees during a time of financial crisis.

Wednesday’s protest ended in violence, with security forces using water cannons and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Authorities reported nearly 90 people detained and 15 taken to hospital, including a police officer who was shot and a protester hit by a tear-gas canister.
