Social Media Blackmail Leads to Teenager’s Suicide

A new Bloomberg documentary highlights the devastating effects of social media blackmail on teenagers. Last February, attorney Rachel Levy spent seven hours in Kyla Palomaki’s apartment, listening to her story about how a hacked Instagram account led to her boyfriend Jordan DeMay’s death.

Jordan, a 17-year-old basketball star, was catfished by an extortionist who blackmailed him over a naked photo he had sent on the platform. The extortionists threatened to share the picture with all his friends and followers unless he paid them immediately. Just six hours after receiving the first message, Jordan died.

The documentary follows a team of attorneys representing families affected by similar incidents, seeking justice and accountability for the perpetrators.
