Social Media Influences Add Words to English Dictionary

Cambridge Dictionary has added 6,000 new words to its online edition over the past year, including “skibidi,” “delulu,” and “tradwife.” These terms originated from social media platforms, where they were used in everyday conversations.

“Skibidi” is a versatile word that can mean cool or bad, or be used without meaning for humor. The term was coined by the creator of a viral YouTube series about human heads emerging from toilets. On the other hand, “delulu” is derived from “delusional,” referring to someone who believes things are not true because they choose to.

The phrase gained mainstream recognition in March when Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese used it during a speech in Parliament. This event marked a shift as internet culture increasingly influences the English language. The dictionary’s lexical program manager, Colin McIntosh, stated that only words with staying power are added.

Other recent additions include “tradwife,” describing influencers promoting traditional roles, and “broligarchy,” a combination of “bro” and “oligarchy.” Pre-existing phrases have also acquired new meanings, such as “snackable” describing content consumed in small bursts and the use of “red flag” and “green flag” to describe qualities in partners.
