Social Security Payments in 2025: What to Expect

This July, Social Security payments will be distributed according to the regular schedule. However, some recipients may face a surprise – up to 50% of benefits will be withheld from those who have outstanding overpayments.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has released its payment schedule for 2025 and 2026 online. This schedule shows that July’s payments should arrive on time, but the SSA is also introducing a new repayment process to reclaim overpayments from around 2 million people.

Those with outstanding overpayments will have up to 50% of their monthly benefits withheld until they start paying back the money. The SSA has tried to reclaim these overpayments in the fiscal year that ended September 2023, but the exact number of recipients affected is unclear.

For SSI recipients, July’s payment schedule remains unchanged. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) checks will be issued on Tuesday, July 1, and subsequent payments will follow a similar pattern.

Meanwhile, Social Security benefits for those who qualify are set to increase in 2025. The full retirement age has gradually increased over the years, with individuals born between May 2, 1958, and February 28, 1959, reaching their full retirement age this year. However, workers can choose to receive benefits as early as age 62 or delay claiming until age 70 for a higher monthly payout.

As of 2025, the maximum Social Security benefit will be $4,018 per month, totaling over $48,000 annually. Other changes include a smaller cost-of-living adjustment (2.5%), an increase in the maximum taxable earnings limit from $168,000 to $176,100, and expanded appointment-based services at Social Security offices nationwide.
