The Social Security Administration (SSA) will implement stronger identity checks for millions of people starting March 31. The new policy requires individuals without access to an online “My Social Security” account to visit agency field offices in person with proof of their identity.
According to Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek, the SSA aims to protect Americans’ records with integrity and vigilance. The agency has introduced updated methods for proving identity, which will expedite service and speed up processing times.
Under the new policy, individuals without online access can initiate benefit claims by phone but must verify their identity in person before finalizing their claim. Those who need assistance can call 1-800-772-1213 to request an in-person appointment at a nearby SSA field office.
The SSA has also announced that direct deposit requests will be processed within one business day, both online and in-person, reducing the previous 30-day waiting period for online changes.
