A partial solar eclipse was observed across the North and East of England, with skywatchers sharing their photographs of the rare event. The eclipse began at 10:07 GMT and ended at 12:00 on Saturday, with viewers managing to capture images despite grey and overcast conditions.
In Cumbria, photographer Paul Grindley managed to take a shot when clouds parted for a few seconds, while in South Shields, Andy Morl was able to get some good shots despite cloud covering the eclipse just after maximum coverage. Graham Waite from Darlington noted that his photograph featured a “dramatic sky,” and Richard R Clark’s image showed the Sun being obscured by the Moon in Roker.
The Royal Astronomical Society reported that the Moon reached its maximum coverage of the Sun at about 11:00, when the eclipse appeared most dramatic. During this time, around 30-50% of the Sun was covered by the Moon, making it a memorable event for those who witnessed it.
