Somalia and Somaliland Reject US Proposal to Resettle Gaza Refugees

Somalia and its breakaway region of Somaliland have rejected a proposal from the United States to resettle Palestinians from Gaza, their foreign ministers said on Friday. The countries stated they had not received any such proposal from the US or Israel.

The proposal, which was reported by the Associated Press, aims to use African territory for resettling Palestinians from Gaza. However, Sudanese officials have rejected the plan, saying it would be unacceptable.

Somalia’s Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said his country categorically rejects any proposal that would undermine the Palestinian people’s right to live peacefully on their ancestral land. Somaliland’s Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adan also stated there are no talks with anyone regarding Palestinians.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The UN has also expressed opposition to plans that could lead to forced displacement of people or ethnic cleansing.

Palestinian leaders have rejected the proposal, calling it “silly” and saying the Palestinians will not leave their land. Israeli ministers are exploring ways to facilitate the voluntary departure of Palestinians from Gaza but are not considering forcible expulsions.
