Sonic 3 Soars to Box Office Victory Over Lion King

Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has taken the top spot at the box office ahead of the holiday season, surpassing Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King.” According to studio estimates, “Sonic 3” debuted with $62 million in ticket sales over the weekend.

The film’s success is attributed to its strong reviews and high score from audiences, earning an “A” on CinemaScore. With a budget of $122 million, “Sonic 3” has emerged as one of the most dependable box office forces in recent years.

In contrast, Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” underperformed with only $35 million in domestic ticket sales, despite launching wider than “Sonic 3.” The film received poor reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences gave it a decent CinemaScore of “A-.”

Disney is still celebrating its strongest annual performance in years, accounting for over $5 billion in ticket sales worldwide. However, the studio’s success is being overshadowed by the dominance of family films like “Sonic 3,” “Moana 2,” and “Inside Out 2” this holiday season.

The box office year was saved by families drawing to multiplexes, according to senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. Animated movies have accounted for 26.5% of the year’s box office, with films like “Sonic 3” contributing significantly to this trend.
