Sonic the Hedgehog 3 outperformed expectations on Christmas Eve, earning $7.5 million from 3,700 North American theaters. The film is projected to bring in $50 million between Wednesday and Sunday, adding to its domestic total of $60 million. Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King trailed behind with $7.1 million on Tuesday, boosting its domestic tally to $49.6 million.
Three new movies will join the box office this week: A Complete Unknown, Nosferatu, and Babygirl. Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold, earned $1.4 million from 1,880 locations, with projected earnings of $15 million over five days. Nosferatu, starring Bill SkarsgÄrd, is expected to deliver the biggest start among newcomers, earning $25 million in its first five days.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s success follows other animated films like Moana 2 and Wicked, which have grossed nearly $400 million and $577 million domestically, respectively. The holiday season sees a mix of popular films and new releases vying for box office attention, with November leftovers filling the gap until the next big release.
