Sonic’s Holiday Box Office Surprise Takes a Dramatic Turn

The Christmas box office is proving to be unpredictable this holiday season, with Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King roaring back into contention after a strong Christmas Day haul. The film earned $14.7 million, beating Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu. In contrast, Sonic 3 took in $10.5 million, while Nosferatu made $11.5 million. A Complete Unknown and Wicked rounded out the top five with $7.1 million and $5.4 million respectively.

Mufasa is now expected to make over $70 million for the five-day holiday, a significant turnaround from its initial box office performance. Sonic 3 is predicted to dip to around $50 million. Meanwhile, Nosferatu is forecasted to take third place with a $40 million result, while A Complete Unknown and Wicked are expected to follow closely behind with $25 million and $20 million respectively.

The reversal of fortunes for these two movies has been one of the biggest surprises of the year, with Disney’s decision to open Mufasa in the Christmas box office corridor paying off. The predictions for the five-day holiday are as follows: Mufasa ($70 million), Sonic 3 ($50 million), Nosferatu ($40 million), A Complete Unknown ($25 million), and Wicked ($20 million).
