Sonos TV Streaming Box Nears Launch with High Price Tag

Sonos, known for its premium audio products, is reportedly working on a new streaming box that will compete with Apple and Roku’s offerings. The upcoming product, codenamed Pinewood, is expected to be a significant departure from the company’s traditional audio-focused approach.

According to reports, the TV streaming box will feature surround sound capabilities, work seamlessly with Sonos speakers, and function as an HDMI switch. Users can control the device using both voice commands and physical remotes. The interface will support popular services such as Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney Plus.

Pricing for Pinewood is expected to be steep, ranging between $200 and $400 – a cost that’s comparable to Nvidia’s high-end Shield TV Pro. This price point is on par with Sonos’ existing audio products, but still higher than many rival streaming services.

The device is said to be compact, measuring about the thickness of a standard deck of cards, and will allow users to wirelessly transmit TV audio to other Sonos speakers without relying on soundbars as a hub. It may also offer features similar to high-end home entertainment systems.

Sonos has faced recent challenges, including a problematic app relaunch and CEO Patrick Spence’s departure in January. However, the company remains committed to launching new products by the end of 2024, with Pinewood being a key development in this effort.
