Sony has unveiled its new top-end OLED TV, the Bravia 8 II, which promises to take image refinement to a new level. Unlike the A95L, which is a QD-OLED TV, the Bravia 8 II uses the latest-gen panel found in the Samsung S95F. This means it’ll be brighter than any previous Sony OLED TV and will have richer colors.
The new panel also enables a glossy finish, unlike the matte Glare-Free 2.0 finish used on the Samsung S95F. Sony hinted that a peak HDR brightness of around 2,500 nits could be possible in real-world tests. However, the difference between the Bravia 8 II and other TVs is not about pure brightness, but how it’s used – which has always been Sony’s forté.
During testing, the author noticed a fundamental difference between the Bravia 8 II and the A95L. The new TV retained nuance in bright scenes, while the A95L lost tonal detail. This was partly due to superior tone mapping and brightness refinement, combined with the new screen.
Colors on the Bravia 8 II were also noticeably different, appearing more saturated but with a slightly different tone. However, this was difficult to quantify without proper calibration. The TV still uses Google TV as its smart TV software.
Pricing and release dates for the Bravia 8 II are yet to be announced, but if it hits similar prices to the LG G5 and Samsung S95F, it could be a game-changer in terms of picture quality. The author looks forward to testing it further when more information becomes available.
