Sony Shakeup: Peter Kang Promoted to President of Production at Columbia Pictures

Sony is undergoing significant changes in its executive ranks, with Peter Kang being promoted to president of production at Columbia Pictures. Josh Greenstein, who was the co-president of the Motion Picture Group alongside Sanford Panitch, will be stepping down for a major role at Skydance after the $8 billion merger with Paramount Global.

Kang joins Sony from Lionsgate, where he served as co-president of production. He has worked on projects including the Planet of the Apes franchise and Gone Girl. Panitch, who now becomes the sole president of Sony’s motion picture group, previously held this role until 2019 when Greenstein was also promoted.

In the wake of Greenstein’s departure, Danielle Misher and Steven O’Dell will continue to oversee the marketing operation at the Motion Picture Group, reporting directly to Tom Rothman. Additionally, Nicholas Weiss and Dave Fruchbom have been promoted to co-heads of Global Creative and Strategy, working closely with O’Dell on international matters.

Andrea Giannetti has been elevated to EVP, production and senior creative at Columbia Pictures, while Kang will report to Panitch. The changes come as Sony prioritizes the theatrical experience, with a promising slate of upcoming movies including Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing and Margot Robbie’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.

“We are all sorry to see Josh go,” Rothman said. “But having a strong bench is key to our organization’s success.” Rothman praised Kang as one of the most skilled and dedicated production executives in Hollywood, confident that he will lead Columbia Pictures to success.
