Sony Sues Tencent Over Alleged Clone of Horizon Series

Sony has filed a lawsuit against gaming giant Tencent, claiming the company’s upcoming game Light of Motiram is a “slavish clone” of the Horizon series developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). The complaint alleges that numerous aspects of the games are identical or highly similar, including creature design, protagonist character, marketing materials, and gameplay themes.

Similarities between Light of Motiram and the Horizon series include post-apocalyptic worlds overrun by giant robot dinosaurs, human tribes fighting against machine animals, and red-haired female protagonists. Even the game’s lead character wears a device similar to Aloy’s “Focus” earpiece.

Sony claims that Tencent began developing Light of Motiram in 2023 while also trying to secure a licensing deal to develop its own Horizon game, but was rejected. Despite this, Tencent continued development and even approached Sony for a resolution, only to be met with repeated rejections.

The lawsuit seeks to forbid Tencent from infringing on Sony’s copyright, demand damages of up to $150,000 per work infringed, and have all infringing materials destroyed. A release date for Light of Motiram has not been announced.
